Essentia Health Hosts Bike Challenge May 11

essentia-health

(information from Essentia Health Press Release)

Children are invited with their parents, to the Bike Challenge from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. on Saturday, May 11 at the Brainerd High School’s lower parking lot. And don’t forget to bring your bike and helmet!

Bicycling is a favorite past time for all ages, but understanding safety first is the key to staying safe and having fun! Children and their bike will visit various stations for a review of bicycle safety rules, a bicycle safety check, be checked for a properly fitted helmet. Then they will put the knowledge they gained to the test by riding a mock course. Once complete, they will be awarded with a certificate of completion.

If a child does not have a bike helmet or the one they have does not fit properly, they will receive one from Essentia Health. “We are excited to bring this event to our community,” said Amanda Svir, Trauma Coordinator at Essentia Health – St. Joseph’s Medical Center. “Learning bicycling safety at a young age will stick with someone for life, just like riding a bike.”

The Bike Challenge is open to riders of all ages free of charge. The event will be held rain or shine and is brought to you by:

“This (Bike Challenge) is an opportunity for us to provide the community with injury prevention,” said Svir who noted that last year’s second Bike Challenge doubled in participants from the first year. “It’s a way to actively engage kids and inform them of some of the things that they can do to prevent injuries while riding a bike.”

Essentia Health Host "Heart-Healthy" Grocery Store Tours

Eariler this year I had the pleasure of being part of Essentia Health’s Better U campaign.

Better U was an 8-week heart health makeover where a group of Brainerd Lakes folks had the opportunity for a heart check-up with the staff at the Brainerd Lakes Heart & Vascular Center at Essentia Health – St. Joseph’s Medical Center, to consult with registered dietitians, and have an opportunity to discuss heart health with cardiologists Dr. Michael Rich and Dr. Mark Johnson. All of the participants had an initial wellness screening where height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, -HDL/LDL, triglycerides, body mass index and blood glucose is measured. I am happy to say my cholesterol was fine, the rest?…meh.

Anyhoo it was a great opportunity to learn about heart health and healthy eating. One of my favorite evenings was when we did the “grocery store tour” with an Essentia Health dietician(I think it was Teresa Farrell). It was super eye-opening and I took away some very valuable info and knowledge from that tour.

I am also excited to see Essentia is offering this again! TODAY. So if you are interested in learning to shop the healthy way at local grocery stores, and which foods are best for overall health, I would highly recommend this tour:

Heart-Healthy Grocery Store Tour October 11
Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean protein foods have the nutrients you need to stay healthy. Essentia Health registered dietitians offer free grocery store tours to help you learn how to read food labels and choose heart-healthy foods. The 90-minute tours are part of a partnership between the Brainerd Lakes Heart & Vascular Center at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center and three local grocery stores.
DATE                                       TIME                STORE
Thursday, October 11                9:30-11 a.m.      Baxter Cub Foods
“There is interest in the community to make heart-healthy choices,” says Denise Cleveland, a registered dietitian and director of nutrition services at Essentia Health in Brainerd. “But everyone could use some extra information to help interpret the food labels and learn more about how we can use that information to make healthy choices.”
The Heart healthy program also placed 400 blue tags identifying items that meet criteria set by the American Heart Association. That means foods with less than 480 milligrams of sodium per serving, less than one gram of saturated fats, and less than .5 gram of trans fat per serving. Of course, the selected foods are just some of the heart-healthy choices available in the stores. Patients are encouraged to talk to their doctor or dietitian for recommendations on specific medical needs.

Tours will be 30-minutes of instruction followed by a one hour guided tour of the store talking about Heart Healthy choices. Pre-registration is required as tour sizes are limited. To register call (218) 828-7583, e-mail hearthealthygrocerytour@essentiahealth.org, or online at essentiahealth.org.

Sunday Spotlight: Dr. Janelle Strom, M.D from Essentia Health

Sunday Spotlight time again! And once again we are continuing our quest to help you get to know the amazing team of OBGYN docs at Essentia Health Brainerd Campus. Kind of a “peeling back the layers” a bit to help you get to know them and their lives a bit more. It’s also part of Essentia’s MatchOBGYN.org efforts to introduce potential patients to their doctors before making an appointment so they can personally make a connection and informed decision.
Dr Janelle Strom M.D
Obstetrician/Gynecologist

Where are you from? Fargo North Dakota and went to high school at Pelican Rapids, MN.

Where did you study? Medical School at University of North Dakota, Grand Forks and Residency at Creighton University, Omaha, NE
Did someone inspire you to become a doctor? Medicine for me, has always been a life-long interest.
Why did you decide to specialize in OB Medicine? OB offers a great variety from caring for the mother and baby to surgery.
What drew you to Brainerd, MN for your practice? Essentia Health offers the best quality and safest care for patients with a complete team that includes Board Certified Pediatricians, Hospitalists, and 24/7 Anesthesiologists.
Describe your area(s) of focus within OB/GYN. Delivering babies is a lot of fun. Women’s health care is changing because technology is expanding. It is a great area of medicine for life-long learners. By bring daVinnci surgery options to my patients I am able to offer them minimally invasive solutions. I also enjoy working with high risk OB patients as well as later age mothers, addressing their specific risk factors and care.
Describe your personality and how it plays a part in the way you interact with patients. I put patients at ease. It’s my job to worry, so the patient doesn’t have to. I pay attention to the details.
What are your passions outside of medicine? (hobbies, activities, community involvements, etc.) I enjoy the lake, golf, flower gardening, and cooking.
