I have an AWESOME tradition for New Year planning and self-motivating that I highly recommend to others.
Oh stop. I hear you groaning. Hear me out; it sounds kind of cheesy, but it really helps you get into the best mindset, set the tone, and give you directionfor accomplishing your goals for the new year.
It’s called Dream Boarding or Vision Boarding.
A vision board is something you create full of pictures, or sayings of things you want to bring into your life. It is about using the power of positive thinking, to bring abundance to you.
Here’s the skinny:
- Gather ALL the newspapers/magazines etc. laying around your house and put them in a pile.
- Go through them and cut out images or words that represent what you’d like your new year to be.
- Look for things related to work, family life or personal interests.
- Grab a glue stick and a 16×24 piece of card stock or posterboard and start gluing everything down in a fun, attractive, and thoughtful pattern.
- Add embellishments: I’m a “word girl” so I usually add color/written words/designs to the end. Even if you don’t you’ll be so surprised to see what’s in the final document.
- I’ve even used a dry erase board in the past to add some written (and easily changeable) flair to my clippings.
Now – put it up on your wall so you can look at it every day! I have friends who even make “mini” portable versions of their dream boards in planners and journals. The key is to keep it wherre it can been seen and reviewed DAILY.
Free Online Vision Board Options
If you are more of a “on-line” person, I would recommend Oprah’s Free Dream Board system on Oprah.com. It’s a fun way to create a virtual version that can be looked at daily and easily tweaked.
UBoodle offers a full digital law of attraction service. The free tools include: online vision board, a wishlist, a gratitude list, user community with connections, personal blogs, an online forum on the Secret, the power or positive thinking and other topics, give back capabilities, your own Personal Genie… Their vision board creates a slideshow of pictures that you upload from your computer, and others can’t see them.
Digital Dreamboard is another free vision board maker that requires you only to register. The process is pretty simple: upload the images from your computer, then drag&drop them to your vision board as you like. You can also add text (the text editing toolbox allows you to change the text itself, the font, size and color).
Jack Canfield (The Chicken Soup for the Soul guy) also has a FREE Vision Board App.

It will soon be the month of JUNE; the official the “halfway mark” until the next New Year. Kinda makes your stomach roll doesn’t it?
Around here, June also marks the end of the school year (insert massive happy dance HERE) and the beginning of summer FUN! I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again, I love being self-employed this time of year. I am able to make some bank yet flex my work around the needs of my family and the desire to enjoy these delightful summer months.
BUT, I am also slipping into Lazy Mode. That’s the mode where you stare mournfully out your office window wishing you could be doing less work and more sun-soaking-up. I think it has reached epidemic proportions for me…and it’s only mid-June. My daily work/gig prospecting has taken a backseat to scrolling Pinterest for fun crafts and cool things for me and the kids to do.
NOT GOOD, grasshoppa
This is the PERFECT time to pull out your Dream Board or Vision Board and take a look at how your year is shaping up.
Here’s a cool story- In June of 2016 I re-did my Dream Board because I felt my focus and priorities shifting on a few things. I have also achieved some things and want to focus on the remaining goals for the rest of the year. Here’s my original post about the power of Dream Boards and planners and also my old Dream Board…which leads me to #3….
Look in the middle of this picture (hint: red truck). I truly, truly do not remember putting this pic on my Board in January but lo-and-behold, that was exactly what I was driving and had just signed the papers on it the week before. True story folks.
It also Created a Make-More-Money incentive: Now, I honestly would NOT rush out and buy a 2016 Explorer like I did. But as you can see, it was on my Dream Board!
NOW I have this rather LARGE car payment after many years of having NO car payment. It is pretty damn motivating. Having this new and looming need for $$ incentive has done wonders for re-igniting my flame for success, let me tell you. Bottom line; have something to shoot for. An incentive so big, you hardly dare to dream about it.
Do you feel like you are floundering a bit? It’s OK, you are normal. But let’s turn this trend around:)
ONE LAST THOUGHT:
Summer fun is such an important part of life…BUT, I know you need to make a living as well. I firmly believe that earning all money in the world is not worth sacrificing the most precious moments in your life for. Not only is it OK to take a break, but it is imperative that you do so. Luckily there is a way to earn an honest income AND be able to have the flexibility to take time to smell the roses in life.
Want to know more? Have you been secretly (or not-so-secretly) dreaming of working from home, making an honest living and flexing that work around the needs of your family? NO, this is not one of those assemble-rubber-duckies-for-ten-cents-a-bird gig. Those type of gigs suck…right along with the “Make money taking surveys!” silliness. I am talking about taking the skills you already have and finding people/clients who are willing to pay you for your knowledge/help/guidance.
My commitment to this subject is a sincere desire to help others. My goal in becoming an “expert” on the topic of working from home successfully (re: emotional and financial success) isn’t to come across as a giant smartypants. My goal is to help readers, and women just like me, discover that there IS “life beyond the cubicle.”
I want to educate newbie and veteran solopreneurs (in my fun and quirky style) that working from the comfort of home and supporting a family is totally possible. My FREElance FREEdom ebook is not “the fluff” of working from home. It is real life, I’ve-been-there-done-that, “no B.S.” details that share the tips, secrets, best practices, processes and resources that peel back the curtains of being self-employed and a business owner. Working from home is not all butterflies and unicorns, but it IS completely worth it.
