Eariler this year I had the pleasure of being part of Essentia Health’s Better U campaign.
Better U was an 8-week heart health makeover where a group of Brainerd Lakes folks had the opportunity for a heart check-up with the staff at the Brainerd Lakes Heart & Vascular Center at Essentia Health – St. Joseph’s Medical Center, to consult with registered dietitians, and have an opportunity to discuss heart health with cardiologists Dr. Michael Rich and Dr. Mark Johnson. All of the participants had an initial wellness screening where height, weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, -HDL/LDL, triglycerides, body mass index and blood glucose is measured. I am happy to say my cholesterol was fine, the rest?…meh.
Anyhoo it was a great opportunity to learn about heart health and healthy eating. One of my favorite evenings was when we did the “grocery store tour” with an Essentia Health dietician(I think it was Teresa Farrell). It was super eye-opening and I took away some very valuable info and knowledge from that tour.

Heart-Healthy Grocery Store Tour October 11
Before you eat, think about what goes on your plate. Vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean protein foods have the nutrients you need to stay healthy. Essentia Health registered dietitians offer free grocery store tours to help you learn how to read food labels and choose heart-healthy foods. The 90-minute tours are part of a partnership between the Brainerd Lakes Heart & Vascular Center at Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center and three local grocery stores.

“There is interest in the community to make heart-healthy choices,” says Denise Cleveland, a registered dietitian and director of nutrition services at Essentia Health in Brainerd. “But everyone could use some extra information to help interpret the food labels and learn more about how we can use that information to make healthy choices.”
The Heart healthy program also placed 400 blue tags identifying items that meet criteria set by the American Heart Association. That means foods with less than 480 milligrams of sodium per serving, less than one gram of saturated fats, and less than .5 gram of trans fat per serving. Of course, the selected foods are just some of the heart-healthy choices available in the stores. Patients are encouraged to talk to their doctor or dietitian for recommendations on specific medical needs.
Tours will be 30-minutes of instruction followed by a one hour guided tour of the store talking about Heart Healthy choices. Pre-registration is required as tour sizes are limited. To register call (218) 828-7583, e-mail email@example.com, or online at essentiahealth.org.
