Real Mom’s Food Journey: Don’t Forget Your Muscle Soldiers!

I am the first to admit…this week I have been a TOAD.

Not slimy-warty-sit-in-a-dark-damp-spot-TOAD. A non-exercising TOAD.

I seem to have contracted the latest cold/flu/Iwannasleepallday Creepy Crud. The only good thing about this particular flavor of Creeping Crud is that, I don’t have much of an appetite.

So despite the discomfort, I consider that a BONUS.

So as I was snoofing, sneezing, and hacking up a lung (and wondering what the heck am I gonna write about this week) I get a positively brilliant email from Kelli Mankowski. Anyone who knows Kelli, knows she is a fireball of energy and a very cool chick. She shared something with me that really made my day, and how I’m gonna share it with you. Enjoy!

Dear Becky,

One thing I keep in mind during the “lifestyle change” process is muscle. Here’s an analogy that helped me understand how important muscle is… (of course, this is just an example, and everybody’s body is different and blah, blah, blah)

A person’s body has a certain amount of muscle or “soldiers” in this analogy. The purpose or job of the body’s “soldiers” is to burn one calorie each day. So, if “Suzie” has 800 soldiers on Monday plus she walks on her treadmill and burns 200 calories her total caloric burn for the day would be:

800 calories (burned by the soldiers)

+ 200 calories (burned on the treadmill)

1000 total calories burned on Monday

On Tuesday, “Suzie” decided to use her soldiers to “recruit” new soldiers (i.e. via lifting weights, doing yoga, or any other sort of weight building exercise). Now, “Suzie” will probably only burn 50 calories during her day’s exercises, but she has recruited another 100 soldiers. So, Tuesday’s total burn:

800 calories (original soldiers)

100 calories (new soldiers)

+ 50 calories (burned during weight training)

950 total calories burned on Tuesday

She seemed to burn less on Tuesday, but with the new soldiers, Wednesday looks like this:
800 calories (original soldiers)

100 calories (from Tuesday’s new soldiers)

+ 200 calories (burned on Treadmill)
1100 total calories – up 100 calories from Monday!!

On Thursday she did more weight training and had :

800 calories (original soldiers)

100 calories (from Tuesday’s new soldiers)

100 calories (from Thursday’s new soldiers)

+ 50 calories (burned during weight training)

1050 total calories burned!

So then Friday on the treadmill went like:800 calories (original soldiers)

100 calories (from Tuesday’s new soldiers)

100 calories (From Thursday’s new soldiers)

+ 200 calories (burned on Treadmill)

1200 total calories – up 200 calories from Monday!!

Saturday’s weight training meant:

800 calories (original soldiers)

100 calories (from Tuesday’s new soldiers)

100 calories (from Thursday’s new soldiers)

100 calories (from Saturday’s new soldiers)

+ 50 calories (burned during weight training)

1150 total calories burned

So, finally on Sunday “Suzie’s”day of rest she is actually burning:

800 calories (original soldiers)

100 calories (from Tuesday’s new soldiers)

100 calories (from Thursday’s new soldiers)

100 calories (from Saturday’s new soldiers)

1100 calories

…which, if you look closely, is more than she burned on Monday AFTER her treadmill round…

Muscle is HUGE in the lifestyle change process. It also keeps your body stronger during the aging process, protects against osteoporosis, etc., etc., etc. Don’t forget to build your muscle army!

I think this made my day because I KNOW I am toning up. I KNOW IT. I see it when I look in the mirror.

My clothes fit differently. But all this is little consolation when the $$##@@!!! numbers on the scale ain’t movin! BUT, I know now I am on the right track. I am building my Muscle Army and this knowledge will keep me going. A big, giant, slightly germy HUG to you, Kelli!

As this Real Mom’s Food Journey adventure continues, I’ve been getting sooo many awesome tips on weight loss from readers. REALLY good ones.
